A perfect cocktail is refreshing, delicious, and guaranteed to start the party. Enter bourbon sangria–a modern twist on the classic Spanish sangria. Packed with bold flavors–from smooth bourbon to sweet fruit juices and red wine, bourbon sangria can be combined with whatever fruits you have.
Sangria with bourbon could also be called whiskey sangria. I learned on the bourbon trail that all bourbon is whiskey, but not all whiskey is bourbon. So you can choose what to call it…bourbon sangria or whiskey sangria?
What Ingredients Are In Bourbon Sangria?
Bourbon sangria has just a few ingredient to produce a cocktail that is sure to impress.
- 1/2 Cup Bourbon – A good quality bourbon is essential for bourbon sangria. If it’s not good enough to sip, you shouldn’t use it in this recipe.
- 1 Bottle Dry Red Wine – I use a dry red wine, traditional sangria also uses a dry wine. Along with the fruit juices and just a bit of sugar, this sangria will be have just the right amount of sweetness. If you would prefer a super sweet sangria, feel free to use a sweet red wine.
- 1 1/2 Cup Orange Juice & 1 1/2 Cup Pineapple Juice – The fruit juices add sweetness and a fresh taste to the sangria. I love the combination of pineapple juice and orange juice in this recipe.
- 2 Tablespoons Sugar – When we use a dry red wine to make sangria, I’ve noticed that adding a little bit of sugar balances out the red wine and gives the drink the perfect amount of sweetness, without making it too sugary.
- Fresh Fruit – Go wild here. I just added sliced oranges to the sangria, but you could add slices of lemons, chopped apples, or maybe a little pineapple.
How To Make Bourbon Sangria
Be sure to make this at least two hours in advance to allow the flavors to fully develop.
First, slice the orange into thin slices. Add the fruit to a pitcher and top it with the bottle of wine, 1/2 cup of bourbon, 1 1/2 cup of pineapple juice, 1 1/2 cup of orange juice and 2 tablespoons sugar.
Stir well and refrigerate for at least two hours.
